Abstract

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become an essential decision-support technology for addressing the multifaceted challenges of rapid urbanization and infrastructure development in Pakistan. With urban population growth accelerating and major cities such as Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad facing severe pressures from unplanned sprawl, traffic congestion, environmental degradation, and climate-induced disasters, GIS offers sophisticated spatial analysis capabilities that enhance land-use planning, zoning, traffic optimization, environmental impact assessments, utility management, and cultural heritage preservation. This article examines the current applications of GIS by key institutions including development authorities and SUPARCO, while highlighting its critical role in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects, smart city initiatives, and disaster risk reduction following major flood events. Despite notable progress, significant implementation barriers persist, including outdated data, institutional coordination gaps, capacity constraints, and policy shortcomings. The study further explores future pathways through integration with artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, digital twins, and the National Spatial Data Infrastructure. It concludes that strategic investment in GIS infrastructure, human capital, and governance frameworks is vital for fostering sustainable, resilient, and inclusive urban development across Pakistan. By bridging technological capabilities with policy reforms and multi-sector collaboration, GIS can significantly contribute to creating efficient, climate-adaptive, and livable cities that support Pakistan’s long-term socio-economic objectives.
