Enterprise systems are commonly developed using monolithic software architectures. However, this approach is often not well suited for Internet of Things (IoT) environments due to the large number and diversity of connected devices. As IoT systems continue to grow, managing scalability, flexibility, and frequent updates becomes increasingly challenging. This study explores the role of microservices architecture (MSA) in the context of IoT systems. A conceptual architecture is discussed to identify the main components and relationships involved in IoT environments while considering key characteristics of microservices. The conceptual model highlights important aspects related to the integration of microservices in IoT infrastructures. Based on this understanding, a reference architecture is outlined to support the development of modular and distributed IoT applications.
