Integrating Peace Education and Democratic Values into Social Studies Curriculum for Enhancing Citizenship Development among Students

The present study titled “Integrating Peace Education and Democratic Values into Social Studies Curriculum for Enhancing Citizenship Development among Students” examined the role of Social Studies curriculum in promoting peaceful and democratic citizenship among students. The study aimed to examine the integration of peace education and democratic values into Social Studies curriculum, investigate its relationship with students’ citizenship competencies, and analyze students’ perceptions regarding tolerance, social responsibility, and democratic participation. The study employed a quantitative research design under the positivist research philosophy. The population consisted of secondary school students of public and private schools in Islamabad Capital Territory, from which a sample of 200 students was selected through a multistage sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, and the collected data were analyzed using SPSS through descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis. The findings of the first objective revealed that students perceived significant integration of peace education and democratic values in Social Studies curriculum, particularly regarding tolerance, equality, democratic rights, and conflict resolution. Based on this finding, it was recommended that curriculum developers should further strengthen peace education and democratic citizenship themes in Social Studies textbooks and learning activities. The study concluded that Social Studies curriculum plays an important role in developing students’ peaceful attitudes, democratic values, and civic competencies. The study is significant for curriculum planners, policymakers, teachers, and educational institutions as it provides evidence regarding the importance of value-based Social Studies education for building inclusive, responsible, and democratic societies.
