Abstract

The paper examined prevalence, etiology and antimicrobial resistance of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) in children at Mardan Medical Complex. There were 20 positive cases of UTI out of the 50 mid stream urine samples with girls (70%), having a much higher prevalence than boys (30%). The prevalence also rose with the age and it was 65 percent at age 10. Staphylococcus aureus (15%), Escherichia coli (55%), was the most frequent isolate. An API kit characterization and biochemical testing of bacteria demonstrated a high rate of antibiotic resistance; S. aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae were those that demonstrated Cefepime and Amoxicillin resistance. The Tissue Culture Plate method of biofilm analysis showed strong biofilm producers to be K. pneumoniae, Serratia marcescens and E. coli. The results show a great load of multi-drug resistant and biofilm forming uropathogens in children of school age, making the development of successful clinical control measures significant.
