Zoysia japonica (Korean or Japanese lawngrass) has gained prominence as a resilient, low-maintenance warm-season turfgrass for lawns, recreational areas, and landscapes across Pakistan's diverse climatic zones. This review synthesizes current knowledge on its botanical traits, morphological adaptations, and management strategies tailored to Pakistani conditions, including alkaline soils, extreme temperature variations, salinity in coastal regions, and water scarcity. Key aspects covered include establishment methods (primarily vegetative propagation via plugging, sprigging, or sodding), irrigation efficiency leveraging its C4 photosynthesis and drought tolerance, conservative fertilization regimes to minimize thatch and disease risks, integrated pest and disease management (focusing on Large Patch, white grubs, and chinch bugs), weed suppression during slow establishment, mowing practices, thatch control through aeration, and salinity mitigation in coastal areas like Karachi. The species demonstrates superior cold hardiness in highland/transition zones, heat and drought tolerance in lowland arid plains, and moderate salinity resistance, outperforming many alternatives in wear tolerance and aesthetic density. Challenges such as slow establishment, low soil organic matter, and fungal susceptibility under monsoon humidity are addressed through cultural, biological, and targeted chemical interventions. Improved cultivars and sustainable practices offer potential for enhanced performance amid climate pressures and urbanization.
