Sustainable Strategies for Agricultural Protection in Pakistan

Pakistan's agriculture, contributing 23.54% to GDP and employing 37.4% of the workforce, faces existential threats from climate change, water scarcity, and soil degradation affecting 44% of arable land. This study evaluates sustainable protection strategies through a mixed-methods RCT across 500 smallholder farmers in four provinces (2025-2026). The integrated Conservation Agriculture + IPM + Climate-Smart Agriculture package delivered transformative results: 38% wheat yield gains (4,312 vs. 3,124 kg/ha control), 48% water savings, 64% pesticide reduction, BCR 2.36, and 22% soil organic carbon improvement in one season. Regional heterogeneity showed Sindh IPM dominance (71% pesticide cut) and Balochistan CSA superiority (59% water savings). APSIM modeling projects 2030 climate resilience under RCP8.5. Difference-in-Differences estimates confirm causality, with qualitative data revealing economic returns and peer learning as adoption drivers (82% continuation rate). Policy recommendations advocate reallocating PKR 341 billion agricultural subsidies toward integrated packages, targeting 2.3 million ha immediate scaling potential generating PKR 200 billion farm income. This provides causal evidence for South Asia's sustainable agriculture transformation.
