MEDIATING ROLE OF COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SLEEP QUALITY AND SYMPTOMS OF DEMENTIA AMONG NIGHT SHIFT WORKERS

The current study aims to explore the relationship between sleep quality, cognitive functioning, and symptoms of dementia among night shift workers, focusing middle-aged adults. Specifically, it investigates how poor sleep quality may impair cognitive functioning, thereby increasing the likelihood of developing symptoms of dementia among Pakistani night shift workers. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of poor sleep quality as a predictor of developing dementia among night shift workers, and the mediating role of cognitive functioning in the relationship between sleep quality and symptoms of dementia. Furthermore, it also investigates the moderating effects of demographic factors such as age, gender, and work experience on these relationships. Quantitative cross-sectional research was conducted from the sample of 200 Middle-aged adults of (25-45 years). Those Middle-aged adults was selected for the study who have been working in night shift for at least 6 months. Four standardized self-report questionnaires (English version) along with the demographic sheet and consent form were used, i.e., Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Cognitive Functioning Self-Assessment Scale (CFSS), Montreal Cognitive Assessment scale (MOCA). Analysis run through using SPSS 23 and Process Macro which included Pearson correlation coefficients, independent sample t-test, regression analysis, mediation, and moderation analyses. The current research aims to provide insights into the cognitive risks associated with night shift work, particularly regarding the potential for developing symptoms of dementia. It will raise awareness among the working population and will help in developing workplace policies by introducing flexible working hours, thereby allowing employees to choose shifts that align with their natural circadian rhythm. This may enhance both sleep quality and cognitive performance of employees in different organizations.
