Abstract

This study investigates the role of metadiscourse markers in enhancing coherence and cohesion in academic writing among undergraduate EFL learners. Metadiscourse markers, as proposed by Hyland (2005), function as linguistic devices that help writers organize ideas, guide readers through the text, and establish interaction with the audience. These markers contribute significantly to textual clarity, logical flow, and reader engagement, which are essential components of effective academic writing. However, many EFL students struggle to produce coherent and cohesive texts due to limited awareness and inadequate use of such markers. The study adopts a quantitative research design with supplementary qualitative textual analysis. Data are collected from academic essays written by undergraduate students enrolled in English language courses at a public sector university. A purposive sample of 100 essays is analyzed using Hyland’s interpersonal model of metadiscourse, focusing on both interactive markers (transitions, frame markers, endophoric markers, evidentials, and code glosses) and interactional markers (hedges, boosters, attitude markers, engagement markers, and self-mentions). Statistical analysis is used to examine the frequency and distribution of these markers, while textual analysis explores their contribution to coherence and cohesion. The findings reveal that the effective use of metadiscourse markers significantly improves the organization, readability and interpretive clarity of academic texts. The study also anticipates that explicit instruction in metadiscourse can enhance students’ writing proficiency and academic communication skills.
